Until Programs Like adidas’ “Made to be Remade” are the Norm, Recycling Matters

In a recent discussion on the AppleTV Jon Stewart show, there was a joke about recycling. The joke was centered on how the Earth is dying anyway, so what’s the point of recycling. The sarcasm was understood, but in a clickbait, fast moving society, people may see a title and consider it as a ‘real’ analysis. adidas and brands like On, are making a sincere effort to create footwear with a better method of make that is more responsible and thoughtful about the environment. Made to be Remade from adidas is a long-term strategy where adidas will eventually create sportswear designed with the end of life in mind:

Made to be Remade products are the very first products for which we have developed an end-of-life solution, where we can ensure that once returned, those products will be remade into something new.

Until we can innovate virgin plastic out of our production process altogether, limiting its use to the minimum amount possible is the goal. By focusing on circularity, we are working towards a world where products are made to be remade, not thrown away.

A disruption to the industry’s linear production process, the concept of circularity argues that garments should have more than a single lifespan. Once you’ve worn it down, you return it and we keep your gear in play by remaking it. The end of one product is the beginning of the next.

Until adidas and other companies truly implement programs where they utilize eco-friendly materials and can actually recycle their products, it’s critical that companies like Sneaker Impact take up the mantle of helping to prolong the life of EVA and PU constructed products in the marketplace today. Kudos to adidas for innovating and supporting the charge towards better products for a better environment.
